The history of the Greenleaf Branch in Goldsboro, North Carolina starts with missionaries during the period between 1896 and 1900 when approximately 100 people joined the Church. The missionaries began visiting in the homes around Goldsboro in 1900. The Elders first held Sunday School in a rented storehouse. This Sunday School was re-organized on the 8th of November 1896. On June 6, 1897 the Sunday School was re-organized with Stephen Henry Price, as Superintendent. Later the members held...

Ultrametric trees are trees whose leaves lie at the same distance from the root. They are used to model the genealogy of a population of particles co-existing at the same point in time. We show how the boundary of an ultrametric tree, like any compact ultrametric space, can be represented in a simple way via the so-called comb metric. We display a variety of examples of random combs and explain how they can be used in applications. In particular, we review some old and recent results regarding...

This paper discusses variance estimation in sequential Monte Carlo methods, alternatively termed particle filters. The variance estimator that we propose is a natural modification of that suggested by H. P. Chan and T. L. Lai [A general theory of particle filters in hidden Markov models and some applications. Ann. Statist., 41(6):2877-2904, 2013], which allows the variance to be estimated in a single run of the particle filter by tracing the genealogical history of the particles. However, due...

Last Year at Betty and Bob's: A Novelty is the first in a series of novellas emerging from a writing practice that taps the cusp of consciousness between dreaming and waking. A storyline, or genealogy, tinted a shade of RGB blue, is fashioned by thinking through the felt unthought of this between space. A fabulation, an anarchive of what passes through. Lucid dreaming of this type is rife with allusions to conceptual and material goings-on, manifesting in awkward imaginaries. The dream personas...

An increasing number of individuals are turning to Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) genetic testing to learn about their predisposition to diseases, traits, and/or ancestry. DTC companies like 23andme and Ancestry.com have started to offer popular and affordable ancestry and genealogy tests, with services allowing users to find unknown relatives and long-distant cousins. Naturally, access and possible dissemination of genetic data prompts serious privacy concerns, thus motivating the need to design...

We consider a continuous population whose dynamics is described by the standard stationary Fleming-Viot process, so that the genealogy of $n$ uniformly sampled individuals is distributed as the Kingman $n$-coalescent. In this note, we study some genealogical properties of this population when the sample is conditioned to fall entirely into a subpopulation with most recent common ancestor (MRCA) shorter than $\varepsilon$. First, using the comb representation of the total genealogy (Lambert...

We decompose the genealogy of a general superprocess with spatially dependent branching mechanism with respect to the last individual alive (Williams decomposition). This is a generalization of the main result of Delmas and H\'{e}nard [Electron. J. Probab.,18,1-43,2013] where only superprocesses with spatially dependent quadratic branching mechanism were considered. As an application of the Williams decomposition, we prove that, for some superprocesses, the normalized total mass will converge...

It is well known that the mean field theory of directed polymers in a random medium exhibits replica symmetry breaking with a distribution of overlaps which consists of two delta functions. Here we show that the leading finite size correction to this distribution of overlaps has a universal character which can be computed explicitly. Our results can also be interpreted as genealogical properties of branching Brownian motion or of branching random walks.

We study the scaling limit of a large class of voter model perturbations in one dimension, including stochastic Potts models, to a universal limiting object, the continuum voter model perturbation. The perturbations can be described in terms of bulk and boundary nucleations of new colors (opinions). The discrete and continuum (space) models are obtained from their respective duals, the discrete net with killing and Brownian net with killing. These determine the color genealogy by means of...

In now classic work, David Kendall (1966) recognized that the Yule process and Poisson process could be related by a (random) time change. Furthermore, he showed that the Yule population size rescaled by its mean has an almost sure exponentially distributed limit as $t\to \infty$. In this note we introduce a class of coupled delayed Yule processes parameterized by $0 < \alpha \le 1$ that includes the Poisson process at $\alpha = {1/2}$. Moreover we extend Kendall's limit theorem to include a...

The Beta coalescents are stochastic processes modeling the genealogy of a population. They appear as the rescaled limits of the genealogical trees of numerous stochastic population models. In this article, we take interest in the number of blocs at small times in the Beta coalescent. Berestycki, Berestycki and Schweinsberg proved a law of large numbers for this quantity. Recently, Limic and Talarczyk proved that a functional central limit theorem holds as well. We give here a simple proof for...

We consider fragmentations of an R-tree $T$ driven by cuts arriving according to a Poisson process on $T \times [0, \infty)$, where the first co-ordinate specifies the location of the cut and the second the time at which it occurs. The genealogy of such a fragmentation is encoded by the so-called cut-tree, which was introduced by Bertoin and Miermont for a fragmentation of the Brownian continuum random tree. The cut-tree was generalised by Dieuleveut to a fragmentation of the $\alpha$-stable...

Dreams for Dead Bodies: Blackness, Labor, and  the Corpus of American Detective Fiction  offers new arguments about the origins of detective fiction in the United States, tracing the lineage of the genre back to unexpected texts and uncovering how authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Rudolph Fisher made use of the genre’s puzzle-elements to explore the shifting dynamics of race and labor in America.   The author constructs an interracial genealogy of detective...

We ask the question "when will natural selection on a gene in a spatially structured population cause a detectable trace in the patterns of genetic variation observed in the contemporary population?". We focus on the situation in which 'neighbourhood size', that is the effective local population density, is small. The genealogy relating individuals in a sample from the population is embedded in a spatial version of the ancestral selection graph and through applying a diffusive scaling...

Plymouth, Massachusetts sent 800 men to serve in the Army or Navy during the Civil War.  Archived copies of the Plymouth newspapers issued during the war, provide a detailed account of the men that served and of the impact on the lives of Plymouth citizens through letters from the men serving, articles about them, and articles on the home front.  This book contains a transcription of those letters and articles along with supplemental information from other sources to provide a comprehensive...

Phylodynamics seeks to estimate effective population size fluctuations from molecular sequences of individuals sampled from a population of interest. One way to accomplish this task formulates an observed sequence data likelihood exploiting a coalescent model for the sampled individuals' genealogy and then integrating over all possible genealogies via Monte Carlo or, less efficiently, by conditioning on one genealogy estimated from the sequence data. However, when analyzing sequences sampled...

The propensity of looking into genealogy, caste-atrocities, social boycott, and the ambition of upward (caste) mobility are consecutive features of rural societies across the country. On the one hand, the rural society has been represented in long time by deep-rooted casteism that creates kind of blind perception or faith towards his own caste and mythological beliefs for showing the pseudo superiority, and its result is being reflected by irrational practices like Biradari Bhoj (caste oriented...

We consider a branching population where individuals live and reproduce independently. Their lifetimes are i.i.d. and they give birth at a constant rate b. The genealogical tree spanned by this process is called a splitting tree, and the population counting process is a homogeneous, binary Crump-Mode-Jagers process. We suppose that mutations affect individuals independently at a constant rate $\\theta$ during their lifetimes, under the infinite-alleles assumption: each new mutation gives a new...
