If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? And if something were created but never permanently saved, does it (or did it) exist? These philosophical questions may be difficult, if not impossible, to answer. In the age of the internet, the latter question may have some very practical implications.

Prior to digitized information, libraries served as the keepers of the permanent record of civilization’s intellectual output. Printed materials, books, newspapers, magazines, journals, reports, etc., as well as sound and video recordings were dutifully collected, organized and made available for public use.
